Walking Meetings with Claude

My best thinking happens on foot with an AI in my ear. The method behind the walking meeting, and how to run your first one today.

The highest leverage habit in this entire series requires no setup, no integration, and no desk. I go for a walk, put Claude's voice mode in my ear, and hold a working meeting with it. The access methods article mentioned this in passing. This article is the full method, because there is a method, and the vlog version films a real one so you can hear what it actually sounds like.

Why walking, specifically

Everyone knows thinking is better on foot, the pacing founder is a cliché for a reason. The historical problem was leakage: the walk produces the breakthrough and the footpath keeps it, because by the time you are back at a keyboard, the sharpness is gone. Voice mode fixes the leak. The thinking happens out loud, the transcript catches every word, and the walk ends with an artefact instead of a vibe. Dead time in, finished thinking out.

The method

Open with a destination. Not the route, the outcome. I start every walking meeting the same way: "By the end of this walk I want to have decided X" or "worked out my position on Y." An aimless chat produces an aimless transcript, a destination turns the walk into a meeting.

Use it as a sparring partner, not an oracle. The value is not asking questions and receiving answers, it is thinking out loud at something that pushes back. My standing instructions for these sessions ask for exactly that: challenge my reasoning, name what I am avoiding, argue the other side before agreeing with me. Rubber ducking with a duck that talks back.

Let it interview you. When I am stuck rather than deciding, I flip it: "Ask me questions until we find what's actually bothering me about this." Being interviewed while walking is disarmingly effective, the answers you give a voice while moving are more honest than the ones you type

Close with the capture. The last five minutes, every time: "Summarise what we covered, list the decisions, list my actions, and draft the message I said I'd send." Sit down later, open the same conversation on the laptop, per the surfaces article, and the artefact is waiting. The walk did the work.

The driving version, with the obvious caveat

The same habit works on long drives, hands free, eyes and attention on the road, treated exactly like a phone call to a colleague, which is to say: not during the tricky merge, and never at the expense of driving. The commute is many people's largest block of unclaimed thinking time, and reclaiming even part of it, safely, is a meaningful weekly gain.

Your first one, today

Pick one decision you have been circling for a fortnight. Put your headphones in, start voice mode, state the destination out loud, and walk for twenty minutes. Do the closing capture before you stop. That is the entire practice, and I am yet to see anyone try it properly once and not keep it.
